RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement) is the RBI system built specifically for high-value transfers. Its defining feature is the ₹2 lakh minimum — it is not meant for small payments — and it settles each transaction instantly and individually.
What “real-time gross settlement” means
Two things make RTGS distinct. Real-time: the transfer is processed the moment it is received, not in batches. Gross settlement: each transaction is settled on its own, one-to-one, rather than being netted off against others. Together they make RTGS the fastest and most certain route for large sums.
Limits, timings and charges
- Minimum: ₹2 lakh. Maximum: no RBI limit.
- Timing: real-time; the beneficiary is usually credited within 30 minutes. Available 24×7.
- Charges: free for online RTGS; branch transfers may carry a small fee.
RTGS vs NEFT
Both are RBI systems and free online, but RTGS is real-time with a ₹2 lakh floor, while NEFT is batched with no minimum. Use RTGS when you are sending a large amount that must arrive immediately — a property payment, say. For the full comparison see our transfer guide.
What you need
The beneficiary’s name, account number and IFSC code — the same details as NEFT and IMPS.
