Indian STD Phone Codes

Complete 2026 Directory — 100+ Area Codes

What is an STD Code?

STD (Subscriber Trunk Dialling) codes are telephone area codes used in India for making long-distance calls within the country. Every city, town, and region in India has a unique STD code assigned by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India.

STD codes are essential for dialling landline numbers from one city to another. While mobile phone numbers in India are 10 digits and don't require an STD prefix, landline calls still use the traditional STD dialling system.

Metro City STD Codes

India's major metropolitan cities have short 2-digit STD codes:

City STD Code State Full Dialling Format
Delhi / NCR 011 Delhi 011-XXXXXXXX
Mumbai 022 Maharashtra 022-XXXXXXXX
Kolkata 033 West Bengal 033-XXXXXXXX
Chennai 044 Tamil Nadu 044-XXXXXXXX
Bangalore 080 Karnataka 080-XXXXXXXX
Hyderabad 040 Telangana 040-XXXXXXXX

Pune 020 Maharashtra 020-XXXXXXXX

How to Dial STD Numbers

There are different formats depending on where you are calling from:

  • Within India (landline to landline): Dial 0 + STD Code + Local Number. Example: 0-11-23456789 for Delhi.
  • Within India (mobile to landline): Same format — 0 + STD Code + Local Number.
  • From abroad to India: Dial +91 + STD Code (without leading 0) + Local Number. Example: +91-11-23456789.
  • Within the same city: Dial only the local number without the STD code.
