Before you can send money by NEFT, RTGS or IMPS, you usually have to add the recipient as a beneficiary (payee) in your bank app or net banking. Here is exactly how, and what to watch out for.

What you need first

  • The beneficiary’s full name (as per their bank account)
  • Their account number
  • The branch IFSC code — look it up with our IFSC finder if you do not have it

Step-by-step

  • 1. Log in to your bank app or net banking.
  • 2. Go to Payments / Transfers → Manage payees → Add beneficiary.
  • 3. Enter the name, account number and IFSC. Re-enter the account number to avoid typos.
  • 4. Confirm with the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
  • 5. Wait for the cooling-off period (below), then send.

The cooling-off period

For security, most banks apply a cooling-off period of around 30 minutes to a few hours before a newly added beneficiary can receive a large amount. During this window you can often still send a small capped amount. Add the payee a little ahead of time if you have a big transfer planned.

UPI needs no beneficiary

If you only want to pay a small amount, UPI skips this entirely — just scan a QR or enter a UPI ID and pay instantly. See which method to use.

Safety tips

  • Transfers go by account number, not name — double-check both number and IFSC.
  • For a first-time payee, send a small test amount first.
  • Never add a beneficiary on someone else’s instruction over a call — a common scam.
