Banks use several different numbers, and it is easy to mix them up. The key difference: an account number identifies one account, while a customer ID (also called CIF) identifies you — and can link several accounts together.

Account number

Your account number is the unique number of a single bank account — the one people use to send you money by NEFT, RTGS or IMPS (along with the IFSC code). If you have a savings and a current account, each has its own account number.

Customer ID / CIF

CIF stands for Customer Information File. Your customer ID (CIF number) is a single identifier for you as a customer. All your accounts, deposits and loans with that bank sit under one customer ID — which is why net banking shows everything in one place after you log in.

Where to find each

  • Account number: on your cheque, passbook front page, and in the bank app under account details.
  • Customer ID / CIF: usually on the first page of your passbook and on your welcome kit; net banking displays it in your profile.

When you need each

Use the account number to receive transfers. You typically need the customer ID to register for net banking or to log in at some banks.

Frequently asked questions

No. The account number identifies one account; the customer ID (CIF) identifies you as a customer and can link several accounts together.

What is a CIF number?

CIF stands for Customer Information File. It is a single ID under which all your accounts, deposits and loans with a bank are grouped.

Where do I find my customer ID?

Usually on the first page of your passbook, your welcome kit, or in the profile section of net banking.

Limits, charges and procedures are set by the RBI, NPCI and individual banks and can change. Always confirm current details in your own bank’s app before a transfer. Last updated June 2026.
